PAWTUCKET – The city's only hotel, improved and with a new name, is back and ready to welcome guests. Following a year of top- to-bottom improvements on the inside and outside of the former Comfort Inn, the new Hampton Inn by Hilton Pawtucket opened last week at 2 George St. The hotel off I-95, fea- turing some of the best views of the Pawtucket River Bridge, Slater Mill, City Hall and the Apex Department Store, wel- comed its first guest after millions of dollars in renovations. Patti McAlpine, sales manager for the hotel, said it's good for staff to be back at work in new surroundings designed to make the guest experi- ence as positive as possible. It's not that there was anything wrong with the Comfort Inn way of doing things, she said, but the Hampton Inn, with its "100 percent happy" guarantee for customers, brings a fresh approach and a "much better experience" she thinks visitors will love. The guarantee means the City's only hotel reopens under new name after year of upgrades By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com See HOTEL, Page 11 Young talent takeover PAWTUCKET – It's been almost a year since a first-of-its-kind art instal- lation over I-95 was supposed to have been installed, but city officials say they aren't giving up hope of seeing it happen. The Breeze has learned that costs have ballooned beyond the $100,000 budget for the project, due in part to higher fees the Rhode Island Department of Transportation would charge to shut down lanes of the highway so work could proceed. Installation was originally sched- uled for August or September of last year. Sue Mara, acting direc- tor of Pawtucket Planning and Redevelopment, told The Breeze Monday that the cost of shutting down highway lanes is "not the main issue." "The cost of lane closures was something we had assumed would be part of the cost of construction," 150-foot piece of 'landmark' art over I-95 is a year late By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com See ART, Page 2 Serving Pawtucket Breeze THE VALLEY FREE valleybreeze.com @ AUGUST 2-8, 2017 755 Central Avenue, Pawtucket, Rhode Island 401-723-9463 • www.scsri.org • mtetzner@scsri.org Call for a personal tour: Where morals and values meet academic excellence Extended Care is available 2:30 – 5:30pm SAINT CECILIA SCHOOL SAINT CECILIA SCHOOL Celebrating over 100 years of Catholic education!
