NORTH PROVIDENCE – Like many local residents, Town Councilor Stephen Feola had long been under the impression that the town's outdoor burning law is fairly relaxed. Officials he spoke with on more than one occasion told him that fires are allowed as long as the purpose of having one is to cook something. Earlier this sum- mer, said Feola, he heard from a resident who had built a fire pit and started using it, only to have a neighbor call the North Providence Fire Department on him. Firefighters told the resident that since he was using the fire for cook- ing, it was OK for him to have it, said Feola. Less than two weeks later, that same resident was again using his fire pit, this time with a grate he'd purchased for cooking, and again the neighbor called the fire depart- ment. When fire personnel respond- ed that time, they told him town law doesn't allow him to use the fire pit at all. Lombardi still isn't confirming rumors that he plans to fire Pelagio and replace him, even in the wake of new details on a May altercation involving the chief, but he repeated that he does expect improvement in the department soon. "I'm talking with a couple peo- ple I think could help move the department along," he said.
