LIVING A Valley Breeze Newspaper Breeze THE NORTH PROVIDENCE FREE valleybreeze.com @ NOVEMBER 16-22, 2016 NORTH PROVIDENCE – The Nov. 8 election solidified what many had already deduced, that Mayor Charles Lombardi should have a lot less opposition on a new Town Council. Residents in North Providence have grown accustomed to the political feud between Lombardi and Councilor Kristen Catanzaro since Catanzaro was elected to the council six years ago, but Catanzaro is leaving the board after challenging Lombardi for mayor this year. In Catanzaro's place will be freshman District 3 Councilor Steven DiLorenzo, a Lombardi ally who says he wants to help move the town forward. DiLorenzo did not say whether he'll chal- lenge Lombardi on many votes, but said he'll work hard for the initiatives he brought forward during his campaign. The Democrat DiLorenzo said he began reaching out to fellow colleagues after last week's election and expects the council to work together for the betterment of the town. Another council member who regu- larly challenged Lombardi, District 2 Councilor Bill Warren, is also leav- ing the council. In his place will be Kenneth Amoriggi, a fellow attorney who ran unopposed for the seat. Amoriggi told The Breeze he has a "cor- dial relationship" with Lombardi. NORTH PROVIDENCE – Students at Stephen Olney Elementary School on Douglas Avenue are reading to help others this year. Because many children don't choose reading as their favorite thing to do, the school has created a seven-member literacy committee with a goal to create opportunities for students to develop a love of learning, said Louise Bello, reading specialist at the school. One of the many initiatives the committee is undertaking to cul- tivate a love of reading is "Be a reader…help the poor." Students in grades K-5 read books and then write and draw about what they read on response sheets. Every response sheet means another food item pur- chased for the school's food pantry, organized by school nurse Michelle Poirier. "The response from our students has been wonderful," said Bello. Committee members started the initiative at the beginning of November and received 50 respons- es from students in the first week, she said. Mendy Chen, a 3rd-grader at the school, said she loves responding to her reading and finds extra satisfac- tion knowing that her reading is helping others. Poirier said she is looking to expand this food pantry to help more families.
