Stephen Archambault, a Democrat, who won his re-election bid on Tuesday, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Smithfield Republican Town Committee Chairman James Archer and Rhode Island Republican Committee Chairman Brandon Bell that claims false allegations in an Oct. 6 political ad published in the Valley Breeze & Observer. The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 31. In the lawsuit, Archambault claims the ad falsely said Smithfield Town Council President Bernie Hawkins, also a Democrat and seeking re-election this year, hired him for $140,000 to pros- ecute Smithfield residents. The ad also goes on to say, "That includes participation in the prosecu- tion of Hawkins' own brother who walked away from a nasty domestic violence incident with barely a wrist slap." The incident the ad references to stems from the Nov. 23, 2014 arrest of Hawkins' younger brother Kevin Hawkins on domestic violence charges, which were later dropped.
