Breeze THE VALLEY FREE JUNE 21-27, 2018 Serving North Smithfield, Blackstone and Woonsocket WOONSOCKET – Cheering families lined the stage at Barry Field as the 276 graduates of Woonsocket High School's Class of 2018 marched proudly to the sound of "Pomp and Circumstance" during their gradua- tion ceremony last Friday, June 15. Dominique DiSpirito led classmates in the national anthem and members of the school's junior ROTC program posted the colors as graduates kicked off the school's 143rd commence- ment exercises. As Principal Carnell Henderson noted in his remarks, this year's grad- uates set a high standard for future classes, closing out the year with both the exuberant celebration and tight- knit dedication that has come to sig- nify the class through their four years of high school. "I'm very proud of each and every one of you and the tone of this class," he said. That tone was at first solemn as Henderson called to my mind two members of the class who would not be walking across the stage. Jack Guerin, who attended Leo Savoie Elementary School, died in 2009 at the age of 9 after a battle with cancer, and Lungpalinya Xaphouvong, a for- mer class vice president, died in a car accident last summer. The students held a moment of silence in honor of their classmates. The mood returned to one of cel- ebration, with no shortage of beach balls, noisemakers and runaway balloons as families and graduates cheered their success. Valedictorian James Simonini offered a theatrical and animated speech, inviting his classmates on stage to join him in perform- ing his own take on "Seasons of Love" from the hit musical "Rent" as he described the personalities of the freshmen who walked into Woonsocket High School four years ago. The budget as recommended by the Budget Committee on June 4 included just over a 2 per- cent increase in school funding, a little more than half the 3.4 percent increase requested by the School Department in their March bud- get recommendation. According to Ezovski, the department's request, if fully funded, would leave only $121,553 to fund increases in other departments while keeping within the state-mandated maximum tax levy increase, negatively impacting the town's ability to improve current services while also increasing its fund balance and saving for future proj- ects.
