CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | JUNE 7-13, 2018 SPORTS & RECREATION 35 BREEZE PHOTO BY ERIC BENEVIDES Cumberland senior MARK COPPOLINO gives it his all in the shot put during last weekend's RIIL Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Brown University. Coppolino placed sixth in the hammer with a throw of 193-2 and 11th in the shot put with a throw of 43-9. one," Choquette noted. "I wasn't able to do it last year, and my sophomore year, I placed second, so this feels good." The state title was the third in Choquette's marvelous high school career, with the second coming at this past February's indoor meet when he repeated as the 55-meter hurdles champion. And like that meet, which saw Choquette capture his title with relative ease, he left no doubt that the event belonged to him. In the preliminary heats, Choquette dusted a field of 23 hurdlers in a time of 15.09 sec- onds that was 0.28 of a second better than the runner-up Edwards and a full second better than all but five of the hurdles who competed in the heats. While Edwards, Morin, and a few other hur- dlers were able to significantly improve their times in the finals, so did Choquette. As he cleared his final hurdle, he took a quick peek to his left to see where Morin was, and when he saw Morin behind him, he gave the number one sign with his left hand as he sped across the finish line. Joining Choquette in the finals were two of his teammates. Sophomore Noah Kell placed fifth in a personal-best time of 15.87 seconds, and junior Nathan Mello just missed out on a place on the podium, as he finished seventh in 16.40. Choquette did quadruple duty on Saturday, not only competing in the 110-meter hurdles, but also taking part in the 300 hurdles and triple and long jumps. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't able to medal in any of those events: Choquette finished seventh in the long jump (20 feet, eight inches), 13th in the triple jump (39-6 ½), and 14th in his final event, the 300 hurdles (43.82). "In the 300 hurdles, I felt my legs were really tired from all the events I did," added Choquette, who will continue his track and field career this fall at nearby Rhode Island College. "It's been a crazy day, but I just tried to have fun today. That's what it's all about." The only other Cumberland male to receive a medal for finishing in the top six of his event was senior Mark Coppolino, who finished sixth in the hammer (193-2) and added an 11th place in the shot put (43-9). Also placing in the top 12 of their events were junior Arthur DeVasto (11th, high jump, 5-8) and classmate Cole Hooper (12th, hammer, 179-5). On the girls' side, two underclassmen were able to land medals, as freshman Nicolette Ducharme placed third in the shot put with a throw of 36-6¾ and sophomore Victoria DeDonato took sixth place in the javelin in 103-2. Taking seventh place in the 1,500 was fresh- man Olivia Belt, whose personal-best time of 4:53.50 qualified her for the freshman event at the New Balance National Championships that takes place from June 15-17. Belt had raced in the girls' freshman mile at March's New Balance Indoors and placed 25th. Top-12 finishes were also provided by sophomore Adah Anderson (8th place, 3,000, 10:56.69), the 4x800 relay team of senior Grace Henson, sophomore Emma Gaudreau, and freshmen Liz Pickering and Bailee Brown (11th, 10:23.52), and junior Caitlyn Longest (11th, pole vault, 7-6). The top six finishers in each event received invitations to Saturday's 73rd annual New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire's Reggie F. Atkins track and field complex in Durham, N.H.
