Choquette wins state outdoor hurdles title Third R.I. championship's the charm for CHS senior; Ducharme places third in girls' shot By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor sports@valleybreeze.com PROVIDENCE – Last year's RIIL Outdoor Track & Field Championships is somewhat of a sore subject for Cumberland High senior Chris Choquette. After winning the indoor state championship in the 55-meter hurdles last year, Choquette had his sights on adding another hurdling title or two to his mantle when the spring season rolled around. But no thanks to shin splints and heel spurs, Choquette was limited to only competing in the long jump during that June's outdoor state meet, and even that didn't go smoothly – Choquette placed in the mid- dle of the pack with a leap that was barely over 20 feet. Of course, that was ancient history to Choquette, who was back at Brown University on Saturday afternoon, 100 percent healthy and hungry for championship glory. And a championship is exactly what Choquette cap- tured. Competing in the 110-meter hurdles, Choquette blazed to victory in the finals in a time of 14.85 seconds that topped the second-place finisher, Chariho senior Mitch Morin, by 0.18 of a second, and the third-place finisher, Bishop Hendricken junior Duwuan Edwards, by nearly a half second.
