"We did better than we thought, being a three-year program," said Ponaganset head coach Tracy Howard. "We made it to the finals, but (we were) just a few goals short." The 2nd-seeded Chieftains finished up their regular season with a record of 13-1 and the Division III-North championship, but the Chargers, who hadn't lost a game since the 2016 season, led the South with a perfect 15-0 record to earn the tournament's top seed. It was humid and there was a threat of show- ers last Saturday, but when both teams faced off, the sun was shining. Nathan Watts, who scored twice to lead the Chieftains, produced the game's first goal 1:44 into play, and later in the opening quarter, Jacob Lincourt added a goal, his 38th of the season, to give Ponaganset a 2-1 lead. But the Chargers, who received multiple goals from Alexi Fauzey and Nathan Allamby, regained the momentum. After Fauzey got the equalizer with just a second left in the quarter, the Chargers went into the second quarter hot and added two more goals, while holding the Chieftains off the board for the rest of the half. Chariho scored the second half's first goal, but with about six minutes in the third quar- ter, David Turbitt got Ponaganset back on the board. The Chargers eventually got that goal See LACROSSE, Page 29
