18 ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL JUNE 7-13, 2018 | VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER | SMITHFIELD SCITUATE FOSTER GLOCESTER Heitke announces candidacy for District 23 state Senate seat Kevin D. Heitke, former Burrillville Town Councilor and Municipal Court Judge, announced his candidacy this week for the District 23 State Senate seat, representing Burrillville, Glocester and a por- tion of North Smithfield. Heitke is running on a platform of protect- ing the environment and securing state aid for the towns of north- west Rhode Island, aiming to fill a void he said opened up following the announcement of Sen. Paul Fogarty's retirement from the General Assembly. "I have worked on many long- term projects with Sen. Fogarty, including continued protection of RIPTA Bus 9 route, working for state aid for schools, protection of the environment, addressing the opioid epidemic and maintain- ing the rural character of Rhode Island's northwest quadrant," Heitke said in his candidacy announcement. The candidate's social media page will contain updates on his platform and campaign. Heitke has been an attorney for 30 years and main- tains a practice, Heitke Cook Antoch LLC, in both Providence and Burrillville. He has been a founding member of the Burrillville Land Trust and cre- ated a public forum for residents of Burrillville to ask questions of their elected officials in a format entitled "10 in 60" during which a panel made up of rotating Town Councilors, department heads and others answer 10 submitted ques- tions in 60 minutes or less. Heitke and his wife, Jo-Ann, a local businesswoman, have three college-educated children. He lives in Burrillville.
