PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Soup Kitchen is one of many area nonprofit agencies seeing a significant decline in giving in 2017. Director Adrienne Marchetti said the kitchen is seeing a sharp drop-off in both cash donations and in-kind contributions, a concerning trend she partially attributes to the national political scene. Other shelters and food pantries in the area, including the Providence Rescue Mission, are also reporting downward trends in donations. Some church- es are also reporting lower giving, despite a strengthening economy. For the first quarter of 2017, over- all cash donations to the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen are down by more than $9,000, from $51,775 to $42,442. Factoring in numbers from last December, the soup kitchen is down by $22,000 over four months. The January-March decline would have been a lot bigger if not for a large number of leftover end-of- the-year contributions for 2016 that counted for January, said Marchetti. PAWTUCKET – Amalia Peña Pérez is the valedictorian and Michael Kodua the salutatorian for Shea High School's Class of 2017. Principal Jacqueline Ash said these two have set the stan- dard for the school on far more than aca- demics, showing great integrity and moral character as they've worked their way to the top of their class of 221 students. Peña Pérez, daugh- ter of Aracelys Pérez, finished her high school career with a weighted grade point average of 4.430. Kodua, son of Mercy and Thomas Kodua, finished just a hair behind, with a weighted GPA of 4.426. Kodua and Peña Pérez will address their classmates at Shea's commence- ment ceremonies on June 8, starting at 6 p.m. at the new Max Read Field. Both big volleyball players and stu- dent leaders, Peña Pérez and Kodua said they are eerily similar in many ways.
