In need of a 5-2 supermajority to overturn Mayor Charles Lombardi's June 11 veto of the budgetary maneuver, Council President Kristen Catanzaro could only muster a 3-3 stalemate, with Councilor Alice Brady absent. Catanzaro was not discouraged, saying she'll try again in "three or four months," when all ongoing questions have been addressed. DUBOIS Breeze Sports Editor PROVIDENCE – Displaying the mental toughness coach Janice DiNobile has preached all season, the North Providence High School softball team rammed past an early deficit and toppled St. Raphael Academy, 3-1, to win the Division II state championship Saturday at Rhode Island College. It was the first Lady Cougar softball state title since 2001. "I had a good feeling coming into the game because we had a really good workout at the school before coming here," said DiNobile. "I'm really happy for these girls because they've worked so hard." It was the third time that North Providence had beaten St. Raphael Academy this season, taking a 5-0 decision and then winning a 1-0 classic pitcher's battle between Lady Cougar Lindsey Cabral and the Saints' Kaylee Sylvestre. In that game, Hannah Dionne knocked in the game's only run with a first-inning double, and she was the batting See CHAMPS, Page 2 NOW OPEN All New... 2242 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence • 401-231-0707 Pastries Bismarks Cream Horns Cream Puffs Awarded as Smithfield's #1 Hearing Practice Pies Apple Blueberry Custard Regular Pizzas Red White with Peppers Thin Crust Pizza Chips Dry Pastries Cakes Fruit Squares Tiramisu Crumb Square Russian tea Fruit Slices Carrot Cake Wednesday is SENIOR DAY 10% OFF All Baked Goods Stuffed Pizzas Creamy Spinach BBQ Chicken Buffalo Chicken Chicken Parm Italian Bread • Rolls • Spinach Pies • Biscuits • Pizza Strips • Calzones • Specialty Items and More ©2013 Breeze Publications Inc. Catanzaro ammunition or radios, said Catanzaro, but about protecting taxpayers against big purchases that might cost the town more money in the long run. Lombardi, backed by Councilors Manny Giusti and Stephen Feola, had contended that Catanzaro's power play was an attempt to add another "unnecessary layer of oversight" to a process Lombardi that is already strictly governed by the U.S. Department of Justice. Operations in the Police Department "are going great," says Lombardi, so why mess with a good thing? But Councilor Bill Warren said Catanzaro's idea is simply to establish greater "transparency" with how the Google cash is spent, to make sure there is an extra level of See GOOGLE, Page 5
