16 SPORTS & RECREATION MARCH 18-24, 2021 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION New-look Lions prepare for D-II football season Lincoln kicks off schedule next week by hosting Moses Brown By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor LINCOLN – The Lincoln High football team only graduated six starters from last season's squad that reached the Division II playoffs, but if you took a look at this spring's roster, you would have thought that the Lions got rocked by graduation. Several players chose not to return to this season's team for various reasons, with the big one because of COVID concerns, and of the 37 players that are on the roster, 16 are freshmen, "and most of them are literally on the field for the first time," said head coach Sean Cavanaugh. "We have a very different roster than expected, but we have our spring roster and we're moving forward," he continued. "We know we're going to struggle, but as always, we're embracing the opportunity to compete, and so far, we're enjoying the experience." Seventeen upperclassmen highlight the Lions' roster, and so does the excitement and hard work that everyone has put into three weeks of practices. The Lions began conditioning workouts on Feb. 22, "and that was a great week for us to reconnect," said Cavanaugh, and their practices after that have been very productive. "It's been great to be back with the team," said Cavanaugh, who is in his sixth year in charge of the Lions. "We share the same concerns as everyone else, but for (the players') mental and physical health, we wholeheartedly believe playing football right now is in their best interests. Based on their energy, enthusiasm, and overall happiness, so far the reward significantly outweighs the risk." "And (the practices) have been good for the staff," he added. "We're coaching them up and we're really enjoying it. (The players) are happy to be here and they're soaking it all in, and I don't have to take attendance because I know my 37 guys are going to be there everyday." The Lions have eight returning BREEZE PHOTO BY ERIC BENEVIDES Senior free safety/running back JOHN JARAMILLO earned All-Division honors last season and will again be one of the players to watch this spring for Lincoln High.
