Cumberland Lincoln Edition Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ MARCH 18-24, 2021 CUMBERLAND – It had been a very long time since Cumberland High sported a football team as young and inexperienced as the product the Clippers put on the field last season. But despite carrying a roster that was loaded with juniors and sophomores and contained just four returning starters, the Clippers were able to shake off a 1-3 start to their Division I season by capturing their final three league games and returning to the D-I playoffs for the third straight season. This spring, those juniors and sophomores are a year older and wiser and looking to make the most out of their four-game schedule, which included games against two-time defending champion Bishop Hendricken, East Providence, Shea, and nearby D-I newcomer Burrillville. "Our senior class this year is very strong," said head coach Josh Lima. "But we still have our juniors and sophomores in the mix, and we have a couple of freshmen who are actually pushing for some time as well. The nice thing about our team is that the young guys are contributing and the older guys are leading the way, which is awesome." While one of the Clippers' goal this spring is to return to the postseason and do some damage there, another one is to make it to the finish line of this 'Fall II' season and avoid any COVID issues that might push the team to the sidelines and possibly end its season. In terms of the playoffs, a 4-0 record "obviously gets you in, and 3-1 also probably gets you in as well," added Lima, who is his seventh season as the Clippers' head coach. "But 2-2 means you're rolling the dice. Our staff knows what it has to do and our players know what they have to do, so it really just going out week by week and taking care of business." "But in this 2020-21 (school) year, you can't look at any of the four teams we're going to play," BREEZE PHOTO BY ERIC BENEVIDES Junior JADEN PIMENTEL, who played wide receiver and defensive back for Cumberland High last season, will be the starting quarterback and one of the team's five captains this spring. The Clippers will kick off their four- game Division I season on Friday, March 26, by hosting Shea High at Tucker Field.
