North Smithfield Blackstone and Woonsocket Edition Sports & Recreation @ FEBRUARY 18-24, 2021 NORTH SMITHFIELD – In a Division II boys' hockey showdown on Sunday afternoon that might decide the third and final playoff seed in their subdivision, North Smithfield High capped an outstanding weekend on its Rhode Island Sports Center ice by grabbing a 4-0 win over neighboring Lincoln. The Northmen, who less than 24 hours earlier, had skated to a 6-2 victory over the Providence Country Day/St. Raphael Academy/Wheeler co-op team, improved to 5-2 with games this week against teams with losing records – Ponaganset on Wednesday morning and the Narragansett/Chariho co-op team on Saturday at 9 p.m. at the R.I.S.C. – remaining on their sched- ule. "We needed (the win) for playoff seeding and obviously to come out of the subdivision," N.S. head coach Ben Shatraw said. "And we showed Novan throwers dominate Class A boys' track meet Coles, Robinson-O'Hagan claim indoor championships with ease, remain 1-2 in country in weight By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor PROVIDENCE – The top two high school weight throwers in the nation put a little more distance between themselves and the rest of the country dur- ing Sunday afternoon's Class A boys' championship meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house. Woonsocket High senior Logan Coles and junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, as expected, took the top two places in the 25-pound weight, with Coles captur- ing the event with a throw of 76 feet, 7 1/2 inches and Robinson-O'Hagan finishing right behind him with a personal-best 74-foot-9 throw. Both throwers delivered season-best throws, as the University of Kentucky-bound Coles topped his best by 6 1/4 inches and Robinson-O'Hagan delivered a 10 1/2-inch PR that also pushed the gap between him and the country's 3rd-ranked thrower, Collin Burkhart of Nazareth, Penn., to two feet, 8 1/2 inches. Robinson-O'Hagan also defended his shot put championship with ease, as he aired out a throw of 59-3/4 that was nearly nine feet further than the second-place finisher, North Kingstown senior Max Northmen boost playoff hopes Hockey team improves to 5-2, tops PSW co-op squad, Lincoln By KAYLA PANU Valley Breeze Sports Writer See WOONSOCKET, Page 13 BREEZE PHOTO BY KAYLA PANU Lincoln junior forward DEVIN CORMIER, left, gets ready to take a shot on North Smithfield senior goalie ETHAN COTE, #1, in front of N.S. sophomore forward LOGAN WHITTON, #13, during Sunday's Division II game at the Rhode Island Sports Center.
