10 SENIOR LIVING GUIDE FEBRUARY 18-24, 2021 | THE VALLEY BREEZE Volunteer, or be served by volunteers Promoting healthy aging takes a village, say represen- tatives from the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging, who are encour- aging older residents to get involved by vol- unteering with them or one of their commu- nity partners. According to the agency, there are approximately 65,000 volun- teers age 55 or older in Rhode Island, contribut- ing $149 million in service across the state. In the wake of COVID-19, the agency has developed Project HELLO, a volunteer-based effort connecting isolated older adults who are in need of socialization to friendly volunteers by telephone. Volunteers are not only providing phone-based wellness checks, but also a sense of community. If you are an older adult who would like to receive a Project HELLO call, call the POINT at 401-462-4444. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, find the "Project HELLO volunteer form" at teering . The Corporation for National and Community Service suggests that volunteering can improve seniors' health and well-being. A great first step down this path is to let local nonprofit organizations know about your desire to donate time to causes such as helping homebound seniors or mentoring at-risk youth.
