Paint party NORTH SMITHFIELD – When it comes to purchasing a home, the annual income needed to afford a median- priced single-family home in North Smithfield outpaces the area's median income by nearly $10,000, putting homeowner- ship out of reach for many residents, according to a report released last month. The 2020 HousingWorks RI Fact Book ranked North Smithfield 20th on its list of most affordable Rhode Island communities to buy a house in. According to the report, the median cost of a single-family home in North Smithfield was $322,500 in 2019, up from $256,189 in 2014. That means someone would need to earn a household income of $90,594 to affordably purchase a median- priced home. The median household income in North Smithfield is $81,649. North Smithfield ranked higher up the list in terms of rental affordability, landing 10th on the list of most affordable communities to rent in Rhode Homeownership out of reach for many N. Donnell, a U.S. Air Force vet- eran, is now the proud holder of a diploma from Framingham High School. Donnell was 18 years old and a sophomore at Framingham South when he left school for military service dur- ing the Vietnam War. "I went down to the Air Force recruitment office while I was on break from school," he said. "I didn't want to wait for the draft, I just signed up quick." Donnell, 68, served three years as a military police officer and an air passenger specialist. The board voted 4-0 last week against issuing a letter of reprimand to Selectman Daniel Keefe, a decision counter to the recommendations of a report by attorney Barry Pollack. Keefe, who was identified in the report as vio- lating conflict-of-interest rules by advo- cating for changes to a series of proposed CARES Act payments that would have benefited his wife, recused himself from the vote.
