Staff shortages delay WHS reopening until 2021 District officials: 'The students are coming, the employees are not' WOONSOCKET – More than 1,500 Woonsocket public school students will not return to school in person until 2021, the most recent change brought on by a statewide school staffing shortage. In an email to fami- lies last Thursday, Sept. 24, Supt. Patrick McGee said that students at Woonsocket High School and Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center would not return to in-person classes until at least Jan. 2. At that time, the department plans to review staffing levels and decide when students can return under a hybrid model. "I apologize for any inconvenience that these modifications will cause your family. Please under- stand that these decisions are not made lightly. Our goal has always been, and will always be to return our students and staff safely," McGee said. He turns from the counter, looking for something that needs fixing, and picks up two empty jugs meant for water and iced coffee. "I'm waiting to fill these, put them back in the fridge," he explains. The man in the sailor's cap is Stewart Holbrook, and he's some- thing of a local legend. Holbrook has been cooking up diner favorites behind the same counter for the past 46 years. Before that, the place was known as the Blackstone Diner, where his father worked before tak- ing a job at Almacs down the street.
