At the event, Civil War reenactors portraying members of the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery Regiment, a unit of African-American soldiers, brought a living history lesson to the students of WMS. The 13 members of the unit, all students at The Met school in Providence, were on a week-long march through Lincoln, Cumberland and Woonsocket. The soldiers demonstrated rifle fire, taught the students close order drill, played a game of Civil War baseball, and illustrated the vast difference between life in the 1860s and today. Stephen Lindberg stating that the department's response to many of the board's questions will be released Lindberg during a special meeting of the School Committee tonight, May 9. "Some of the answers tonight may be abbreviated as some of your possible questions have been answered and then some in a great degree in the report," Lindberg began. The problem began after the School Department submitted an Clifford initial budget request for $1.3 million more than they received in 2013. The budgeters, led by Chairman Michael Clifford, charged that the request was illegal because it exceeded the state-mandated 4 percent cap on requests for increases. Further, it violated Town Charter, the committee said, as the department had not provided prior year expenditures. The Budget Committee obtained much of the information members sought - including a budget for $578,000 less than originally proposed - with the help of the town's attorney.
