20 LETTERS / THE VALLEY JULY 23-29, 2020 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION Jackson: CHS should lose the Clipper name Rhode Island's Black leaders say the words "Providence Plantations" invokes images of slavery and serves as a reminder of Rhode Island's role in the slave trade. They and others have called for the removal of the phrase from our state name. Now comes the time for the residents of Cumberland to look deep within themselves and finally realize that the Cumberland High School mas- cot/nickname – the Clippers—is even more racially offensive. Historians say that there were no slaves in the area designated as Providence Plantations, but Clipper ships were definitely used in the slave trade. No Black man or woman should have to drive by Tucker Field every day and see a granite hitching post marked with the moniker of the very type of ship that shipped his or her enslaved ancestors to America. Chained in the bowels of clipper ships like sardines, these slaves were subject to unhygienic conditions for weeks that wreaked of the wretched, pungent smell of bloody diarrhea that comes along with the dysentery caused by the contaminated food and water that they often went days without. It is time that Cumberland divorce itself from this historically inhumane treatment of Black people. If we can dismiss the honor- ary naming of North Cumberland Middle School for the late Richard B. Lynch for actions not reflective of the "inclusive environment schools are trying to cultivate today," then we would be outright hypocrites to continue to use the Clipper name.
