14 AT HOME JULY 2-8, 2020 | VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER LIVING EDITION It's time for berry picking and farmers markets, but you may have to call ahead first LINCOLN – June is the month I usually go strawberry picking at least once a season to Jaswell's Farm, in Smithfield, or Salisbury Farm in Johnston. It's a pilgrimage I have made with my grandchildren and an experience that has generated many fond memories of freckled faces with strawberry juices dripping down a dimpled chin. This summertime event is a rite of passage and always followed by bak- ing my favorite season-appropriate recipe such as this week's simple strawberry loaf or my favorite blue- berry cake. But with the pandemic still in full swing, I questioned if it was even possible this year. A quick online search gave me some answers. Jaswell's Farm has only a voice- mail message that says due to the COVID-19 crisis they are closed at least until July and to check back often for updates. At Salisbury Farm, the following rules are in effect. First, you must call ahead to schedule an appointment. A face mask is required while on the farm and you must adhere to social distancing rules – remaining six feet apart – even while in the fields. You must wash your hands both before and after picking and use only the containers they provide you as per the Food Safety Modernization Act. Also, you'll need to stay in your assigned rows if berry picking, and yes, this means the little ones too! I don't know about you but doesn't the grass always look greener – or the strawberries more plump – in the next row over? Of course out of respect and caution if you are feeling sick please remain at home. As is the new norm in all busi- nesses it is probably wise to call ahead and find out if there are any restrictions on hours, or other special requirements. Sharon Johnson, one of the three members of the North Scituate Farmers Market managing team sponsored through the Scituate Rotary Club, said they are up and running with some changes. "We set up cones for a one-way pattern for foot traffic and there's an antibacterial station with gloves and wipes for customers if needed." Naturally, you are asked to adhere to state recommendations like wearing a mask and social distancing. Being an outdoor venue she said they have seen a steady flow of patrons and they will step in if a clus- ter or group forms and request for them to space further apart. The market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon, at 46 Institute Lane (on the Art Festival grounds). It's a scenic ride for some fresh and locally grown vegetables, herbs, jams, jellies, beef, crafts and more. The North Scituate Farmers Market will have a raffle on July 4 and a clothing drive on July 18 and Aug. 1. Also, there will be a pet day featur- ing special vendors with supplies for your pets on July 25, according to Sharon. A mask is now part of our daily uniform when leaving your home. I've seen masks now dangling from the rearview mirror of cars, where once a pair of dice, a graduation tas- sel or your baby shoes hung! My best advice for all activities is to plan ahead by calling before hit- ting the road to save some time and possible disappointment for the kids. This is a fluid situation and we have to learn to be willing to adapt. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July! The Recipe Box RHONDA HANSON Strawberry Bread Jaswell's Farm, Smithfield Ingredients: 3 cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. cinnamon 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 & 1/2 cups oil 1 & 1/2 pints strawberries, hulled and chopped 1 cup chopped pecans (optional) Directions: 1. In bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and sugar. Mix well. 2. In a separate bowl mix eggs and oil. Add to dry ingredients. 3. If using nuts, stir in now. 4. Fold in strawberries. 5.
