Woonsocket High School staged a drive-thru cer- emony for graduating seniors last Tuesday. Students arrived by appointment with their families to receive their diploma cases in front of the school's main entrance. The actual diplomas will be delivered later. See more photos on page 8. WOONSOCKET – The familiar sounds of "Pomp and Circumstance" performed by the Woonsocket High School band rang out last Friday, June 5, signaling the start of the school's 145th commencement cer- emonies. The sounds might have been familiar, but the venue was not, at least not for a graduation ceremony. Instead of Barry Field, graduates and their families tuned in to the virtual ceremony from their homes, one of many changes brought about by the ongoing threat of COVID-19. Valedictorian Eric Lu summed up the excitement but also strangeness of the shared virtual experience as he addressed his classmates. "Dear Class of 2020, congratula- tions. And also, welcome to my liv- ing room," he said in a message pre- recorded from his home. Cars were parked in neat rows behind North Smithfield High School, where a large projection screen stood ready on the baseball field. Visitors waited patiently in their vehicles for nightfall and the start of the main feature. But in this case, the main feature wasn't a Hollywood blockbuster, but the proud seniors of the Class of 2020, who graduated on Monday NSHS graduates celebrate with drive-in style sendoff By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com BLACKSTONE – The high-fives were distanced, the music was prere- corded and the crowds were nowhere to be seen as Blackstone-Millville Regional High School celebrated its commencement last Friday, June 5. And yet somehow, the Class of 2020 managed to recapture the magic of graduation, lifting their chins proudly and basking in the cheers of family and school admin- istrators as they crossed the front steps of the high school in what was certainly a commencement to be remembered. The socially distanced ceremony kicked off with a prerecorded mes- sage from school staff that played on phones and computers across both towns as a parade of vehicles lined up beside the building. Speaking from the school gym, Principal Michael Dudek told graduates not to let the events of the past three months hold them back.
