22 IN OUR SCHOOLS JUNE 4-10, 2020 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION Lincoln students to cross stage next week Virtual ceremony planned for later this month LINCOLN – Lincoln school officials have settled on alterna- tive graduation plans to honor this year's graduating seniors whose final semester was cut short due to coro- navirus. School administrators said the goalposts were constantly moving when it came to planning an alterna- tive graduation this year, vocalizing frustration with the state for its ever- changing guidance on large gather- ings. Lincoln has opted for an approach similar to its neighbors in North Providence, with students arriving at Lincoln Middle School by appoint- ment to cross the stage and receive their diploma. Appointments are scheduled to begin on Monday, June 8, running through Thursday. Students will be screened for COVID-19 before entering the building. Superintendent Larry Filippelli said they were able to up the num- ber of guests each graduate can bring from four to ten, plus the graduate. "We told parents that, to the great- est extend possible, if the governor changed any guidelines, that we would make changes to the gradua- tion to make it better for the kids," he said. More people have begun to gather in groups over the last few weeks, emerging from isolation as the local economy begins to reopen, but the school district must still adhere to limits on gatherings set by the state. "We are still under these restric- tions," he said. "We still have to worry about the care and control of the event and the safety of the attendees." Throughout the process, Filippelli said he has tried to approach gradu- ation, "through the lens of the kid," balancing their safety with wanting to plan a memorable event. The district will be providing a complimentary photo for each grad- uate and their family. School Principal Rob Mezzanotte said the district plans to share a virtual graduation ceremony on June 17, which will splice together speeches and video clips of students crossing the stage.
