NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | MAY 14-20, 2020 NORTH SMITHFIELD 5 NORTH SMITHFIELD – With traditional graduation ceremonies on hold, local residents are finding new ways to celebrate the Class of 2020. Three weeks ago, Salyssa Jones, a Cranston resident, started the "Rhode Island Adopt A 2020 Senior" Facebook page. The page allows parents to post photos of their high school graduates for other members to "adopt" with care packages and letters of congratulations. As of this week, the page had grown to more than 2,000 members from all over the state. Jones, a graduate of NEL/CPS Construction & Career Academy, said she founded the page because she was heartbroken for the graduates who won't get to take part in a traditional ceremony. "They worked so hard for the past 12 to 13 years and because of the pan- demic, it has to go unnoticed? I didn't like the thought of that, so I did some- thing to change it," she said. One of those featured on the page is Hope Trowbridge, a soon-to-be gradu- ate of North Smithfield High School. Her mother, Stephanie Trowbridge, shared a photo of Hope and a list of her daughter's interests after learning about the page. A few days later, a care package arrived on their door- step. "It put such a smile on her face," said Stephanie. "She was so happy." The care package came from Scott Watts, a Cranston resident who's already "adopted" four high school seniors from the page. Watts said he learned about the page from his daughter, a friend of Jones, and sees it as a way to give back to his com- munity. "Times are tough for everybody, but to be able to give back a little some- thing for all these kids, it makes you feel good," he said. After connecting with Hope's moth- er, Watts went shopping for a few of Hope's favorite things, including candy, a scented candle and a gradu- 'Adopt-a-senior' pays tribute to Class of 2020 By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com HOPE TROWBRIDGE, a senior at North Smithfield High School, holds up the care package she received.
