Picture perfect WOONSOCKET – Late last month, the effort to renovate the municipal parking lot across the street from the Stadium Theatre unearthed something city workers and local historians did not expect. Brian Cote, a worker for the Woonsocket Highway Department, was observing excavation work on the right side of the parking lot near Holders Lane when the machine pulled up a large slab of cement. Embedded in the slab was a par- tially intact gravestone surrounded by several pieces of old pipes. "It looks like somebody might've tried to fill in the lack of cement they had with the stone," said Cote. "There was some old piping, noth- ing that had to do with the stone or a body or anything. It looks like they just threw in whatever they had available to them." Cote contacted the Woonsocket Historical Society, who in turn passed the gravestone on to Greg Duhamel, a local cemetery enthusiast and volunteer with the Blackstone Valley Historical Society. The stone features a partial epitaph and enough identifying information to reveal its owner died in the month of February at the age of 25. However, most of the details, including a name, are missing from the fragment. The top stu- dent spent her high school days immersed in music, athletics and aca- demic opportunities and said she was raised by a fam- ily that taught her to respect other people and not judge them based on race, gender or sexuality. Now, with graduation ahead, Votta wants to use what she learned to give back to the community and plans to study political science at American University and go on to law school to work on social issues. "I want to be able to use that type of privilege to help others that don't really have the same experiences that I did," she said. Three months later, COVID-19 has disrupted many of the students' end-of-year celebrations, but it hasn't disrupted their plans for next year.
