PAWTUCKET – Development of the city's long-awaited section of the Blackstone River Bikeway is gaining momentum after the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced a $475,000 grant to the city to help add another key segment. Of that total, $400,000 would go to the development of the bike path from Tolman High School at Exchange Street up Front Street to Central Avenue, and another $75,000 would go toward the acquisition of a last small parcel of land needed to make the segment possible. The Breeze reported two weeks ago that another segment of the bike path is being developed from the exist- ing section behind City Hall past the Slater Mill. Once the Front Street section is developed, the city would have a little more than one mile of continuous bike path along the river in the downtown area. The path will cross Exchange Street and go over the river to reach Front Street, according to officials. Roughly 45 percent of the posi- tives in the state are being seen in the Latino community, and 12 per- cent in African Americans, and the populations of those groups are 15 percent and 6 percent statewide. Earlier this month, Byrne was diag- nosed with COVID-19 amid the pan- demic that has impacted thousands across the state. Byrne, a Pawtucket native, lives at Oakland Grove Health Care Center in Woonsocket, one of the facilities that has been hit particu- larly hard by the disease. The news was difficult for Donald Arthurs and his wife, JoAnn, for- mer neighbors of Byrne's who have helped care for her in her old age. Prior to the pandemic, the couple had planned to visit the nursing home to celebrate their friend's 100th birthday this Wednesday, April 29. "I think we were always prepared for the worst," said Arthurs. "We just wished for the best for Mary in all ways and worked for the best." As it turns out, the worst never came to pass. After several days, Byrne began to show signs of improv- ing and now appears on her way to a full recovery.
