NORTH PROVIDENCE – When trash collectors on Nipmuc Trail in North Providence stopped in front of Tricia Lawrence's condo last Thursday, they were greeted by bins decorated as medical profession- als with signs reading, "Thank you, health care workers." Tomorrow's receptacles are slated to be dressed up as essential work- ers, including grocery store employ- ees, trash collectors, and mail or delivery drivers, she said. "My goal is to make people smile," said Lawrence, who lives in the Louisquisset Condos and has been decorating her trash and recy- cling bins for several weeks now. In addition to doing something lighthearted, she said she wanted to pay tribute to the essential work- ers who are putting themselves on the front lines right now while most people are sheltering in place to let them know they are appreciated. Among the health workers on the trash and recycling bins last week were Dr. Nicole Alexander- Scott, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health; Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Decorated bins honor essential workers By MELANIE THIBEAULT Valley Breeze Staff Writer melanie@valleybreeze.com NORTH PROVIDENCE – The North Providence Police Department has its new second-in-command after Chief Arthur Martins, helped by Mayor Charles Lombardi, hired State Police Lt. Alfredo Ruggiero Jr. as his new deputy chief. Martins and Lombardi agreed that this North Providence native was the right choice for the job, with 26 years of on-the-job experience giving him deep knowledge in a host of areas. Martins said Ruggiero's answers were "impactful, thoughtful and thorough," and he believes he'll be the best complement to his own skill set as the department continues to improve and advance. Ruggiero was looking for a new challenge in his career, said Martins, and stated that his time growing up in the town would be an asset to him because he knows so many people here and understands the town so intimately. The $500,000 total announced on Earth Day, the maximum allowed and sought, is another "win-win for us," said Mayor Charles Lombardi, as he said this town desperately needs to maintain open recreation spaces for its residents' quality of life both now and in the future.
