NORTH SMITHFIELD – When Timothy Sheahan was working his first job as a dishwasher at Coffee & Cream, one of his coworkers gave him the nickname "professor." He wasn't an academic star – at Mount Saint Charles Academy, where he graduated in 1994, he didn't take AP biology – but he enjoyed science and would go on to study it at the University of New Hampshire. "His name was Danny, and he ran the drive-thru," Sheahan recalled during a phone interview last week. "And because I was a nerd, he would call me professor. And I just realized that now I'm a professor, and it's ironic." Sheahan isn't just a professor. He's also a research scientist at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Meet the North Smithfield native working on a cure for coronavirus By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com ON THE FRONT LINES TIMOTHY SHEAHAN, a research scientist with a Ph.D. in microbiology and immu- nology, is one of only a handful of scientists in the country testing cures for the coronavirus. NORTH SMITHFIELD – At Brigido's Fresh Market in Slatersville last Thursday, signs of the coronavi- rus pandemic response were every- where. Tape marked off where custom- ers should stand at the deli counter, and plastic shields separated cashiers from the public. Behind those shields, employees wore face masks, a new requirement announced by Gov. Gina Raimondo last week. As part of the order, Raimondo said customers should also wear face masks, something Brigido's employ- ees said could help ensure others' safety as well as their own. "You see some elderly couples who are still out shopping and if you're not wearing a mask, you could transfer it," said Roberta Bergeron, a customer service rep- resentative who's been working at Brigido's for 24 years. That was the ques- tion Monday night as city councilors debated several proposals intended to lessen the impact of the COVID-19 measures on Woonsocket's homeless population. After several weeks of back and forth with other councilors on wheth- er the measures could be considered under the current guidelines for vir- tual meetings, Councilor Alex Kithes succeeded in bringing a series of pro- posals to the table for debate. Among them were two measures that would restrict police from disrupting tem- porary homeless shelters and exempt those identifying as homeless from certain city laws. According to Kithes, the measures came out of conversations with com- munity members and would allow homeless people to maintain some semblance of shelter amid the spread of the disease.
