NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | APRIL 9-15, 2020 THE VALLEY 9 for families, mostly from students practicing their singing at times they otherwise wouldn't. She recalled getting an email from a mother who had two students practicing their music at home at the same time, one in the bathroom and one in the bedroom. "She started the email with, 'I live in a very small house,'" said McAdam. Free online programs have also been a lifesaver for Chef Jade Illum, a culinary teacher at Beacon Charter High School for the Arts. Her students are using a graphic design website called Canva to design their own menus and plan out what they would like to see in a restaurant. Though she's not able to require students to cook at home due to the cost of supplies, many students have done so anyway and shared their creations with the class through photos and video. "I had a student share an amaz- ing pizza with me the other day. It looked better than most pizzas I get delivered," she said. At Blackstone-Millville Regional High School, members of the drama club have used Google Hangouts to continue meeting online, even as their rehearsals for a spring production of "Annie" have been put on hold. According to drama club coordinator Lisa Rounds, the students have been playing improv games to keep in touch. "The kids love them, and it helps them to continue to build their improv skills," she said. "I've also put together a 'karaoke' challenge for any of them who are willing to put themselves out there and post a short video of themselves singing along with their favorite song. Though most teachers don't know what the future will hold, Rounds said she's trying to find creative ways to keep students involved with the school community beyond their academic classes while the measures last.
