Beginning this week, The Valley Breeze is spotlighting the people and professions responding to the COVID-19 crisis in our communities. If you have an idea of some- one who should be featured, please email lauren@valleybreeze.com. WOONSOCKET – When Dr. Matthew Sarasin became medical director of the emergency depart- ment at Landmark Medical Center last summer, he had no idea he'd be dealing with a global pandemic less than a year into the role. "I knew at some point in my career that there would be another round of infectious diseases that would go around. We prepare for disasters," he explained. "I didn't anticipate a large scale infectious disease like this right after starting as director." Sarasin is one of the hundreds of doctors, nurses, medical staff and hospital support staff responding to the coronavirus around the region. For medical providers, the virus is personal as well as professional, with many fielding concerned text messag- es from family members as they treat patients with the virus in emergency rooms and intensive care units. MATTHEW SARASIN, medical director, and COLEEN FOLEY, nursing director, of the emergency department at Landmark Medical Center are among those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Monday, the hospital had seen two patients who tested positive for the virus. For the nation's Emergency Medical Services responders, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a new level of risk to their daily work. Whereas normal protective equip- ment typically includes gloves and possibly goggles, local EMS respond- ers now report wearing full Personal Protective Equipment and asking extensive screening questions before they enter the home of someone who may have COVID-19. "The guys don't want to get sick themselves, but they're more worried about bringing this home to our fami- lies. Anxiety level is up a little bit," said Jay Paskanik, EMS coordinator for the Woonsocket Fire Department. The new protocols have created some frustration for workers who pride themselves on swift action. In the case of a suspected COVID-19 patient, said Paskanik, crews are now required to wait outside while a single person dons protective gear and assesses the EMS responders: 'This is the struggle we're going through every day' By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com BREEZE PHOTO BY LAUREN CLEM GREG CALBO, MOLLY KACHANIS and PAUL FRADE are EMS responders with the Blackstone Fire Department.
