North Providence Edition Sports & Recreation MARCH 25-31, 2020 valleybreeze.com @ Barracudas make waves in RIMA finale Youth swim team racks up 16 All-Star honors, cops fourth place again in championship meet NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The North Providence Barracudas youth swim team wrapped up its out- standing season by placing fourth for the second year in a row at the RIMA (Rhode Island and Massachusetts) Championships that took place on Sunday, March 8, at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth's Tripp Athletic Center. RIMA All-Star recognition was pre- sented to the swimmers who finished among the top five in their respective events, and the Barracudas saw 16 of their swimmers make their way to the awards podium and receive RIMA All-Star status. On the boys' side, Nicandro Pistacchio, who was a freshman on this season's North Providence High swim team, enjoyed an outstanding meet that saw him capture the 200- yard individual medley (2:30.05) and 100-yard backstroke (1:11.37) and place second in the 100-yard back- stroke (1:17.87) in the ages 13-14 divi- sion. The Barracudas also did a lot of damage in the ages 15-18 group. Joseph Beauvais earned runner-up honors in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.81) and took third place in the 200-yard IM (2:32.02), and Gio Soria also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.27) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.83). Two swimmers who helped lead the Cougars' swim team, Tony Azevedo and Vincent Cotoia, also shined in this division, as Azevedo finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.03 seconds) and fifth in the 100-yard free- style (54.28), and Cotoia tacked on a fourth place in the 100-yard back- stroke (1:11.29). In the boys' 8-and-under division, Jonathan Espinosa earned runner-up honors in the 25-yard freestyle (18.18 seconds) and backstroke (22.81), Lorris Bicket took second place in the 100-yard IM (2:26.29) and third in the 25-yard breaststroke (32.76), and Damian Santoro finished fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke (35.66). Also placing in the top three in mul- tiple events was Joseph Lescarbeau in the boys' ages 9-10 division. He claimed second place in the 50-yard backstroke (46.15) and third in the breaststroke (35.66). On the girls' side, Alexandra Cortes captured multiple events in the ages 11-12 division to propel the Barracudas. She captured the 100- yard IM in a time of 1:13.07 and the 50-yard breaststroke in 37.01 seconds. Two members of North Providence High's Division II championship team, Andrea Cortes and Christine Pietkiewicz, also put together excel- lent meets. Like Pistacchio, they finished in the top three in their age divisions in three events. Cortes was second in the 200-yard IM (2:29.07) and the 100-yard free- style (58.54) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.58) in the 15-18 divi- sion, and Pietkiewicz placed second in the 50-yard (28.56) and 100-yard (1:04.23) freestyles and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.58) in the 13-14 division.
