NORTH PROVIDENCE – The extra people out enjoying the sunshine over the weekend certainly didn't match the fact that so much about local life had come to a screeching halt. Local restaurants were forced to either temporarily close their doors or go all-in on takeout menus and other creative solutions after Gov. Gina Raimondo effectively shut down eat-in dining across the state Monday. Mayor Charles Lombardi issued an executive order Monday afternoon declaring a state of municipal emer- gency in North Providence due to com- munity spread of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, in Rhode Island. His order suspends municipal and probate courts, suspends entertain- ment licenses and other special event permits within the town, and postpones public events during the municipal emer- gency, among other directives. Life in town has changed in what seems like the blink of an eye this week, with businesses, churches, senior and childcare centers, funeral homes, theaters, libraries and schools all feeling the impact of the spreading coronavi- rus. City Councilor Tim Rudd last week questioned Lombardi's preference for eventual auto- matic aid, giving as the scenario a fire in the Marieville section of North Providence where North Providence Fire Station 3 is on another call and Pawtucket is deemed closer and called in, leav- ing the west side of the city, where there is only one engine, with no coverage. "It seems like he's going for a com- plete regionaliza- tion, and it would be a grave concern of mine and I'm sure everybody else as far as public safety goes," Rudd said. "I don't think we should go down that road. Pawtucket needs to protect Pawtucket." He said he knows the Pawtucket administration is on his side with this one, and he urged officials to "stay strong" on not agreeing to such an arrangement, calling it a Rudd unhappy with automatic aid, but Lombardi says it makes sense By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com LOMBARDI Mayor Lombardi noted that Pawtucket has a lot more inci- dents than North Providence, or 18,000 calls per year instead of the 8,000 in his town, and calling in the clos- est fire engine would benefit Pawtucket a lot more often than North Providence.
