New owner restores 1886 Cullen Commercial Block CUMBERLAND – In 1886, John Cullen's great grandfather, John F. Cullen, put up a building that would become his general store, dealing in dry goods, clothing, wood and coal to meet the needs of Berkeley Village, while running tenements above the space. The Cullen family would own the building for 130 years when in 2016, they sold it to "Berkeley Boy" Neal Charette, said John Cullen. The group is in the process of reviewing candidates for a list of 25 top endangered homes most critical to the town's historic fabric and most likely to be torn down, and will likely have it ready by March, she said. A multi-pronged approach to sav- ing the town's history features: • A new historic plaque program available for owners of qualified his- toric homes in local historic districts to purchase. The custom plaques, measuring 12 inches by 16 inches, feature hand-painted lettering and are designed to help celebrate the town's history. Plaques include a building's date of construction, the name of the original owner, if available, and the name of the local historic dis- trict, researched by HDC members. The $58 price is well below what is charged in many other local commu- nities, said Hindle Koutsogiane, and the town makes no profit from this program. He has recom- mended an overall budget of $88.3 million, an increase of more than $3.1 million. Broken down, this represents a town operating budget of roughly $23.7 million, $58.5 for education and an allocation of $318,256 for the schools in a deficit reduction resolution. On the town side, Almond is recommending just under $2.7 mil- lion in capital improvements across town, including the replacement of the roof at Lincoln High School, adding soccer fields to Manville Park, and building an addition on the newly regionalized animal Manville Park, shelter addition in Almond's budget By NICOLE DOTZENROD Valley Breeze Staff Writer nicole@valleybreeze.com See BUDGET, Page 4 ALMOND ©2020 THE VALLEY BREEZE Serving Cumberland and Lincoln Breeze THE VALLEY FREE FEBRUARY 20-26, 2020 Wills & Trusts Estate Planning & Settlement The Law Office of George M.
