12 SPORTS & RECREATION JANUARY 9-15, 2020 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION The Providence Gridiron Club recently held its annual MVP Night at the Quonset 'O' Club in North Kingstown. Two hundred and seventy-five people attended the event, which paid tribute to the top offensive and defensive players from each of the state's 43 football-playing high schools. Left, among the honorees were Woonsocket High's COREY BROWN, left, as the Villa Novans' Defensive MVP and ANGEL BENZANT as the Offensive MVP. Right, also honored were the North Smithfield/Mount Saint Charles co-op team's COLE DUBOIS, left, as the squad's Defensive MVP and quar- terback JACK PUCCETTI as the Offensive MVP. The Novans repeated as Division II champions last fall, while the N.S./Mount co-op team captured the first Division IV title in its program's history. Providence Gridiron Club honors MVPs from Super Bowl champions goal in what we're looking to build." Lobisser's niece played on last year's team that finished in a tie for third place with a 9-5 record, but lost in the state semifinals to East Bay for the second year in a row. Lobisser, who attended the final game of that series, said last year's team "did a lot of good things," and he wants to build on what the pre- vious coaches had done before. This year's team contains seven play- ers from Mount, six from Cumberland, and one from the Lincoln School, goalie Amelia Lambert, who along with Mount forward Macee Salley, are the seniors on the roster. Lambert, Salley, and MSC junior Mia Mollicone are the captains. Lobisser is high on Lambert, say- ing that she is "by far the best in the state" and keeps the team in games. Behind her is Mount sophomore Grace Davenport, a transfer student from Medfield (Mass.), who is really good as well, Lobisser said. Offensively, Lobisser said that his entire team has been contributing, all with at least one or two points, and that was evident in his squad's season- opening 11-0 win over the Cranston/ East Greenwich co-op team on Dec. 12 at Adelard. MSC freshman Leah Laquerre, Salley, and Wiehn each led the way with a hat trick, and MSC freshman Sophia Capone added a goal and two assists. Lobisser also highlighted his defense, which includes MSC freshman Alexia Vercauteren and Cumberland freshman Mackenzie Lavallee. "Everyone has been doing what's been asked of them," he said. "As a group, they are willing to learn and listen, and every time we've challenged them to something, they've risen to it. It's certainly been fun to watch." The co-op team was back in action on Wednesday night with another game against the East Bay squad, this time in the J.P. Medeiros Jr. Memorial Cup Game at Portsmouth Abbey's rink. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the locals will return to their league schedule by tak- ing on the defending state champion, La Salle Academy, at Route 146's Rhode Island Sports Center. La Salle will enter this week's action with a 5-0 mark that is a game bet- ter than the East Bay team and the Burrillville/Ponaganset/Bay View co-op squad, which are both tied for second place with 4-1 record. In fifth place is the South County (North Kingstown/ Narragansett/South County) team with a 2-2-1 mark.
