Cumberland Lincoln Edition Sports & Recreation @ JANUARY 9-15, 2020 LINCOLN – When Allison Plante began her freshman year at Lincoln High in the fall of 2016, she had her sights set on starring on the Lions' field hockey team and putting together a remarkable high school career that she hoped would someday help her land a scholarship to play her favorite sport at the Division I or II collegiate level. On Monday afternoon, before a large gath- ering inside her school's library that included family members, friends, and faculty mem- bers, Plante signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her athletic and academic career at a D-I school, Sacred Heart University. But the scholarship she's receiving isn't for field hockey. Instead, the Lincoln senior will be join- ing the Pioneers' women's track and field program as an indoor weight and outdoor hammer thrower. And both Plante, who is currently ranked 25th in the country in the 20-pound weight with a throw of 45 feet, 4¾ inches, and LHS throws coach Brian Grant agreed that she's come a long way from her first practice with the Lions' indoor track and field team as a freshman to where she stands today. "Not all (throwers) start out really well, but when they work hard at it, they actually get some place with it," Grant noted. "And Aly has worked hard. We've been working out this year – she didn't play field hockey this fall – and she's already way better than she was last year." Plante, who had played field hockey since the fifth grade, decided to join the indoor team after her freshman season on the field hockey team "just for fun," she said with a smile after addressing Monday's gathering and signing her paperwork. "My cousin, Kate Zaniol, had been on the team, and she told me I'd have a great time if I joined, so I did. I competed in the shot put and weight, and everything kind of snowballed from there and really took off." At first, "I missed meets for ski season and whatnot, but after my freshman year, that quickly stopped," Plante added. "I took (throwing) more seriously and kind of started to realize the potential that was out there and my dream to go D-I and attend a university like Sacred Heart. I figured, 'Why not give it a shot? It's fun and it's a great sport.'" Plante will become the fifth LHS thrower in the last four years to take their talents to the D-I stage, joining 2017 graduates Samantha Andrews (URI) and Maggie Tarmey (Lehigh), 2018 grad Garrett Doyle (Ohio State), and classmate Kyle Moison (Auburn).
