New shoes for students WOONSOCKET – A change in statewide policy has led to a dramatic increase in the city's school busing costs, with some portions of the trans- portation budget jumping by as much as 67 percent from 2018 to 2019. In fiscal year 2018, the city's Rhode Island Department of Education transportation cost was $819,599. This number, only a portion of the larger transportation budget, covers the inter-district busing costs of stu- dents who, for various reasons, attend school outside the district where they live. These could include students with special medical placements, foster children and students attend- ing a career and technical program in Officials push for change in transportation policy as costs skyrocket By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com See TRANSPORTATION, Page 8 Get in the spirit at Holiday on the Common this Sunday NORTH SMITHFIELD – Holiday on the Common returns to the Slatersville Congregational Church common this Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., bringing with it all the caroling, festive treats and good cheer residents have come to expect from the annual event. Once run by the North Smithfield Prevention Coalition, the event is now organized by Kate Pasquariello, program coordinator for the town's Parks and Recreation Department. Every year, she said, residents come together to reconnect and enjoy some holiday fun. "It's relaxed, it's laid back, come and go as you please, wish each other a happy holiday season," she said. As in years past, the event will include a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus, who will arrive via fire engine. These were some of the questions that arose at an open community forum hosted by the North Smithfield Parks and Recreation Commission last Saturday, Nov. 23. Residents were invited to share their thoughts on these and other topics as part of the commission's process for identifying priorities moving forward. The forum comes at an important time in the town's parks and recre- ation planning.
