24 SPORTS & RECREATION NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 4, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION Next stop: Junior Olympic Nationals Runners from N.C. Surge, Sentinel Striders qualify for meet at Region 1 Championships NEW YORK – Several young cross country runners from Cumberland and Lincoln will get their opportu- nity to test their mettle against some of the elite harriers in the country at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships. Running in the Region 1 champi- onship meet on Sunday at Sunken Meadow State Park in Long Island, N.Y., the North Cumberland Surge's and Sentinel Striders' running clubs saw their share of runners qualify for the national meet by turning in some exceptional performances. And for the second straight meet, Cumberland's Kiley DeFusco of the Striders convincingly won the girls' 11-12 race by topping a field of 120 runners on the 1.86-mile course in a time of 10:41. Cumberland's KILEY DEFUSCO is all by her- self as she gets ready to win the girls' ages 11-12 division race at Sunday's USATF Region 1 championship meet on Sunday at Sunken Meadow State Park in Long Island, N.Y. DeFusco, who earlier this month, captured the state middle school cross country champi- onship, topped a field of 120 runners by win- ning the 1.86-mile race in a time of 10:41. "I haven't personally talked to Matt yet, but I plan to," Blanchard said. "And from what I know, he's defi- nitely willing to help out wherever he can as well. He did a great job at Cumberland and I know he's an alum, so I'm also looking forward to working with him through the transi- tion." A Warwick native who attended Pilgrim High, the 30-year-old Blanchard has spent more than a third of his life on RIC's campus. He graduated from there in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in elementary edu- cation major (with a concentration in math) and spent four seasons as a reliever for the baseball team. Blanchard, who also holds a mas- ter's degree in sports administration from Concordia University-Irvine, stayed at RIC after receiving his bachelor's degree and worked closely with Tencher, and he noted that his experience with him has been valu- able. "Don's taught me a lot," offered Blanchard, who was the recipi- ent of the Transitioning Athletic Administrator Award from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators in 2017. "I spent a lot of time by his side, day by day, overseeing everything from compliance to facilities, equipment ordering, and scheduling." Blanchard's final day at RIC will be Friday, but before then, he's stopped by CHS a handful of times to "walk around the place" and meet with Principal Adolfo Costa and some of the coaches and teachers. "I'm looking to continue to build on the culture that they have cre- ated," he added. "Ultimately, I think it comes down to bettering the expe- rience for the students, whether that means the student-athlete or just the general student, I'm looking to help kind of continue to build a communi- ty that gives a student and a student- athlete a great experience."
