North Smithfield Blackstone and Woonsocket Edition Sports & Recreation @ NOVEMBER 21-27, 2019 WOONSOCKET – So much for that "battle of unbeatens" in Sunday afternoon's Division II Super Bowl. Instead of East Greenwich facing Burrillville this weekend for all the marbles, Cranston Stadium will play host to two teams that didn't pick up their first victories of the season until October, but will have a chance to pick up a shiny championship plaque sometime around 2:30 p.m. One of those teams is the defending champion, Woonsocket, which con- tinued its amazing climb from its 0-4 start in last Saturday afternoon's D-II semifinals by turning in one of its fin- est defensive performances to topple East Greenwich, 7-6. As a result, the Villa Novans will become only the fourth team in the 47-year history of the D-II champi- onship game to earn a spot in the Super Bowl despite having as many as three league losses – Woonsocket had kicked off the season with a non- league defeat to St. Raphael Academy and followed that with losses to Lincoln, Westerly, and E.G. Some people are somewhat shocked Super Bowl-bound again! Unbeaten N.S./Mount holds off Ponaganset in D-IV semis, earns rematch vs. Tiverton By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor NORTH SMITHFIELD – It's going to happen. The North Smithfield/Mount Saint Charles co-op football team is getting its rematch with Tiverton in the Division IV Super Bowl. But before earning its return trip to the champion- ship game, N.S./Mount needed to pass its toughest test of the season in last Friday night's semifinals on its home turf against Ponaganset. Ahead by a 21-7 score just a minute into the second quarter, and seemingly on its way to delivering an early knockout punch, the hosts saw the Chieftains bravely battle back and tie the score with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. But senior kicker Pasquale Camastro delivered the biggest field goal of his high school career, a 20-yard boot with 10.1 seconds to play, and that enabled N.S./ Mount to remain undefeated and escape with a thrill- ing 24-21 triumph. "We always knew it was going to be a game," added North Smithfield junior tailback/linebacker Jordan Allard. "They're a good team, so we weren't expect- ing a 64-0 blowout. We knew it was going to be a Defending champ Woonsocket returns to D-II finals, stuns E.G., 7-6 By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor PHOTO BY CHUCK NADEAU / WWW.CHUCKN.COM North Smithfield junior JORDAN ALLARD, #21, gets ready to pick up a fumble next to teammate FRANK DELUCA, #50, and Ponaganset sophomore MARCUS CARPENTER, #20, and return it to the Chieftains' 21-yard line on the third play of last Friday night's semifinal-round game. The North Smithfield/Mount Saint Charles co-op team earned a return trip to the Division IV Super Bowl by posting a 24-21 victory.
