Accenture's annual holiday shopping survey, reported on by Business Insider, finds that U.S. consumers are more interested in giving and receiving thrifted items. More than half of those who responded said they would consid- er giving someone a secondhand present, and a similar number said they would welcome such gifts. Economists say those numbers coincide with a rapid- ly growing resale market, which is expected to top $51 billion by 2023, according to ThredUp. Certain retailers, including Macy's and J.C. Penney are partnering with ThredUp and others to sell such secondhand items. Denise Mudge, of Cumberland, said her family is full of big readers and loves giving and receiving books from thrift stores. "We don't care where the books come from, and a lot of times the thrift store books look brand new," she said. Much of this trend, according to the experts, is being driven by more shoppers trying to be environmentally conscious. Accenture's study found enthusiasm across the age ranges for thrifted gifts.
