6 WOONSOCKET NOVEMBER 14-20, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION WOONSOCKET – Students in Jodi Michienzi's 5th-grade class at Citizens Memorial Elementary School got a lesson last week in how to make a difference in their school. The students, who were learning about doing good deeds without expecting anything in return, wanted to do something nice for the teach- ers at their school. After hearing that Harris Elementary School had gotten a donation from Cardi's Furniture, they decided to reach out and see if the company would redo their teach- ers' lounge. "We thought it would be nice for the teachers because they've done so much for us," said Avalee Richard, a 5th-grader in the class. The students measured the room and put their persuasive writing skills to work on a group letter signed by everyone in the class. After sending it off early last week, they were sur- prised to get an answer the following day from Peter Cardi saying he'd be glad to help them with their project. On Wednesday, the company deliv- ered a brand new couch and two din- ing room sets to replace the folding tables and mismatched chairs in the lounge. Students cleaned and deco- rated the room and prepared banners to thank the Cardi's delivery drivers. They kept the gift a secret from their teachers until the furniture arrived. Now settled in at the school, teach- ers are enjoying the new furniture, and students are trying to figure out what their next project is going to be. Every day, they keep track of their good deeds to remind them of the small and big ways they can help others. "They are awesome and are begin- ning to see that we all make a differ- ence," said Michienzi.
