6 CUMBERLAND NOVEMBER 14-20, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION CUMBERLAND – The Rhode Island Department of Transportation and its contractors are in the process of installing and activating new LED street lighting around the double roundabout at Diamond Hill Road and I-295. Spokesman Charles St. Martin said RIDOT installed temporary lighting last week to help motorists as the new lights were being installed. There had been a number of com- plaints from drivers trying to navi- gate the roundabouts at night, par- ticularly during windy evenings when traffic barrels were blown around. Several residents indicated on social media that their cars were damaged. Crews will continue work through the end of this construction season, which ends in mid-December, said St. Martin. "At that time, we expect the road to be cleared of all construction- related items," he said, referring to barrels and other devices. RIDOT did a lot of groundwork this year in advance of the realign- ment of the Chapel Four Corners intersection, which is the last part of this project after initially being listed as the first. That groundwork has included utilities, curbing and new mast arms for light poles, said St. Martin. "This work will continue in the spring, with the actual traffic pattern adjustment happening next year," he said. With the realignment of Chapel Four Corners, bringing Angell Road and Bear Hill Road more in line, RIDOT expects to be able to cut out one of the traffic signal phases at that light, shortening wait times for driv- ers in all directions.
