Smithfield Scituate Foster Glocester Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ NOVEMBER 14-20, 2019 CUMBERLAND – The Scituate High boys' soccer team's bid to reach its first championship match since 1995 came up short in the Spartans' Division III semifinal- round game against St. Raphael Academy last Thursday, as the Saints earned their third straight trip to the D-III finals by posting a 4-1 victory on a raw, wet night at Cumberland's Tucker Field. After enduring their struggles during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, the Spartans have improved in each of the last two years to reach the playoffs. It just so happens that in both seasons, the Saints were the ones to eliminate them. III champs in semifinals By KAYLA PANU Valley Breeze & Observer Sports Writer kayla@valleybreeze.com NORTH SMITHFIELD – The Ponaganset High football team will seek its first Super Bowl berth since 2009 on Friday at 7 p.m. when the Chieftains head to North Smithfield High to take on the undefeated North Smithfield/Mount Saint Charles co-op team in a Division IV semifinal-round matchup. The Chieftains, who are 6-3, faced the co-op squad on Nov. 1 on their home field and suffered a 22-7 loss, but last weekend, Ponaganset officially punched its ticket to the postseason by blasting Hope, 43-7. In that victory, Chris Brennan caught a pair of touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Silvaggio, and Marcus Carpenter, Nick Baccala, David Raposa scored on touchdown runs. Defensively, Ryan Smith returned a fumble 45 yards for another TD, and kicker Ryan DeRoche scored seven points by booting a 33-yard field goal and making good on four of his extra- point attempts. The other Division IV semifinal- round game pits Toll Gate at Tiverton, and the Super Bowl is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24, at Cranston Stadium.
