4 ENTERTAINMENT NOVEMBER 13-19, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER LIVING EDITION WOONSOCKET – This weekend, the students of the Mount Saint Charles Academy Drama Club will offer a theater classic with a twist. "The Sound of Music in Concert" will take place in the Bell Tower Theater on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The Friday performance will showcase a junior cast, while the Saturday performance will showcase a senior cast. Audiences are invited to enjoy the classic story of a postulant who proves too high-spirited for the religious life and becomes governess to seven children. Creative Arts Director Emily Luther said the concert format includes all of the favorite songs from the musical but with condensed scenes for a slighter shorter run time. "It was actually an idea that I had seen in action about a year ago, and I had seen a theater company in Providence that performed a musical in concert," she said. "It kind of piqued my inter- est, and I decided it would be something really different and new for Mount to try." "It's not as detail-oriented as a musical would be, and it allows the kids to learn a little bit easier because the scenes are shortened," she added. The performance, she said, will still include costumes and a set in the school's black box theater space. The show will be offered by two casts to give as many students as possible the opportunity to participate and create men- torship between the different grades. The simple format, she added, also allows the school to gear up for its April 2020 performance of "Frozen Jr." That show, she said, will be performed in the Adelard Arena and will include the school's Sur la Glace figure skaters. "This simple production is gearing up so that I can really put a little more of my energy in this huge pro- duction we're doing in the spring," she said. Tickets for "The Sound of Music in Concert" are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and are available at the school's front office.
