10 WOONSOCKET NOVEMBER 7-13, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION Beacon Theatre Workshop takes on Greek classic WOONSOCKET – The students of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts' Beacon Theatre Workshop continue to push themselves with different genres, this time offering a modern take on a Greek classic with "Eurydice." Using Sarah Ruhl's 2003 script, the students weave a tale of love and loss in a dream-like setting reminiscent of ancient Greece. In the story, Eurydice, the lover of Orpheus, is cast into the Underworld, where she faces difficult decisions about her family and life. According to the students, the play will force you to rethink your under- standing of different types of love. "Even some adults struggle to put on this show," said Jeremy Watson of Cumberland, who plays one of three talking stones in the play. "It's difficult for us and we're working on it every single rehearsal without fail." One of the challenges, said director and theater teacher Jason LeClair, is that the hour-and-45-minute produc- tion has no intermission, and some of the actors are onstage the entire show. For the students, delving into Greek myth is a new experience, but not an entirely unfamiliar one. The play, he said, offers familiar themes of love and loss in a plot that evokes the impor- tance of family. "They really are amazing students, and they're pulling it off with such vibrancy," he said. "It's really, truly something to behold because you forget for half a heartbeat that you're watching a high school play." Taylor Dyman of Lincoln stars as Eurydice, while Auden McKenna of Warwick plays Orpheus and Breanna Jones of North Smithfield plays a char- acter known as the Nasty Interesting Man. Gussy Acosta of Cumberland plays Eurydice's father, and Katherine Culhane of Cranston and Bethany Crawford of Warwick play the other two stones, for a total cast of seven. The play, said LeClair, kicks off a season that will focus on mental health and dreams. In February, the students will tackle Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and next spring they'll take on "Big Fish." Showtimes for "Eurydice" are next Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students.
