The veterans came from the RI Veterans Home and local nursing homes. Honoring our veterans at Smithfield Elks luncheon JOHN BOITANO, of Greenville, served in the 25th Infantry in Korea where he saw lots of combat. He says, "You never get over it." DON TOMASSO, of Johnston, served with the Marines in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive and was later assigned to a Swift boat. ERNEST ANDERSON, of North Kingstown, joined the Army in 1943 and served in North Africa and Sicily in World War II. His son Ernest was killed in Vietnam. Women veterans attending the Smithfield Elks luncheon include, from left, ELAINE HILL, of Woonsocket, who retired from the Army as Command Sergeant Major in 2015; Sgt. ANN GARDNER, of North Smithfield, who served in the U.S. Army from 1982-1986; and SUSAN GUILMAIN, of Smithfield, who retired from the Army as a Major in 1999.
