14 PAWTUCKET NOVEMBER 6-12, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | PAWTUCKET EDITION The cameras in school zones are on from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Also helping lead to the lower numbers was the fact that a com- munication error through Verizon caused cameras to be offline during the early part of the week. Some cameras were back online last Tuesday, Oct. 29, and the rest came back online last Thursday, Oct. 31. The connection error was entirely due to an issue with Verizon and had nothing to do with the camera system itself, Arboleda said. It's difficult to say how many incidents there would have been had all cameras functioned prop- erly, said Arboleda, and officials aren't drawing any conclusions about whether having the program go live, with real consequences for speeding or running red lights, led to any widespread change in driver behavior. "It's difficult to say," he said, but officials will continue with their outreach and public information campaign about this camera ticket- ing system designed to enhance public safety. Moving forward, he said, they'll be able to gauge the effectiveness of the system much better. He said he wasn't sure when the cameras in the busy Newport Avenue school zone came back on. Arboleda said the 1,588 figure represents incidents captured by cameras, and not necessarily tickets that will be mailed out. Approximately 160 of the appar- ent violations last week were cap- tured by red-light cameras, and the rest were in school zones. Motorists who receive tickets can appeal them as they would a typi- cal ticket through Municipal Court. These tickets are similar to parking tickets and don't go on a driver's record. Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful wants everyone to join in and commit to reduce, reuse and recycle on this day, and then continue through- out the rest of the year. America Recycles Day is one day to educate, motivate and make recycling bigger and better so we all recycle right in Rhode Island. KBVB is sharing facts on how Rhode Islanders are doing currently with our mixed recycling program. Learn how much recycling is saving in tax dollars, and how much trash we are still landfilling, and other facts. Then test your knowledge with a "Recycle Question of the Day." Starting Friday, Nov. 8, KBVB will ask one question a day on Facebook and its website, where everyone can test their knowledge. The following day, KBVB will share the correct answer to see where we are recy- cling pros and where we might need some clarifications. Finally, KBVB is asking everyone to "Take the Pledge" with Keep America Beautiful. It's fast, it's easy and it says Rhode Islanders care and will pledge to recycle and make a difference all year long. Find out more at, on Facebook, or call Donna Kaehler at 401-724-2200.
