6 CUMBERLAND OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION Editor's note: "In the know" is a feature we run periodically to explain things you pass by every day. CUMBERLAND – A repre- sentative from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has confirmed that the centers of two new roundabouts at Diamond Hill Road and I-295 will be put up for adoption to local businesses willing to maintain them. As was done with previous traf- fic islands in the area, and is still in effect further up Diamond Hill Road and on Mendon Road, the state will allow the businesses to assume the cost of landscaping what they intend to be raised beds within the traffic circles. Charles St. Martin, spokesman for RIDOT, said the roundabouts and full project area along Diamond Hill Road will be landscaped with a variety of plantings, including the landscaped raised beds cars will circle around. As is the case with all round- abouts, a textured truck apron will be installed as well to allow large trucks to pass through, he said. "The landscaping will not be installed until the end of the project, which is next fall," he said. The companies that previously adopted islands in this area can reapply at pot . The landscaping at the round- abouts and other areas along the project will all be done by the same company, likely a subcontractor hired by the primary contractor on the job. RIDOT is responsible for maintenance of the areas, but the agency often saves resources by making areas available to businesses to adopt. The sponsors don't pay to adopt the areas, but they cover the costs of the work and get it done. RIDOT checks periodically to make sure that the landscaping is being done. In exchange, a business gets a sign with its name on the island, but is not allowed to add other advertising features. Any grass areas along a state road would be cut by RIDOT's main- tenance division and the agency would deal with any tree issues such as fallen limbs or other obstructions that are considered a hazard, said St. Martin. Adoption spots don't have to be just in the roundabouts, said St. Martin. "We have other islands or strips of state roads around the state that are maintained by different companies and groups," he said.
