CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6, 2019 CUMBERLAND 5 Low sign-ups on meal program could mean loss of $800,000 Teachers told to cut down on photocopying to save money CUMBERLAND – Showing how even small changes in status can have significant impacts on local educa- tion funding, the Cumberland School Department stands to lose some $800,000 if more students don't sign up for free and reduced-price lunches and breakfasts. According to School Committee member Ray Salvatore, head of the board's finance subcommittee, the program is down 200 students this year, children who didn't file paper- work for the free or reduced-price meals but actually deserve it. If that number holds true, he told the committee last Thursday, Oct. 24, the district stands to lose the $800,000 from its state appro- priation. School officials will be reaching out to the qualified families over the coming weeks to make sure they get the benefits due to them, said Salvatore. Families can visit cumberland- to learn more about how to apply. "Children need healthy meals to learn," states the district website on the free and reduced-price lunch program. "The Cumberland School Department offers healthy meals every school day. Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals." Reduced-price meals are 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. Available documents on the site include frequently asked questions in English and Spanish, how to apply in both languages, and the actual applica- tion in both languages. Salvatore said the lower numbers for the program represent a figure the district should keep in its forecast on the budget. Also at the Oct. 24 meeting, Salvatore announced that principals have notified local teachers that they need to reduce the amount of photo- copying they're doing. One teacher was responsible for some $6,000 worth of copies last year, highlighting increasing costs across the district. Salvatore also updated the commit- tee on budget forecasts showing that needed 2 or 3 percent increases for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 would increase the overall amount of new funds needed by the district by $9.8 million. Committee members are set to meet with Mayor Jeff Mutter to discuss those figures at a preliminary meeting today, Oct. 31.
