First of town's new speed humps installed CUMBERLAND – When Sonny Drive resident Dave Blanchette recently saw a driver speeding by his home, he yelled at her to slow down. He says she yelled back that she was only going 30 mph. He responded, "The speed limit is 15, a--hole." She responded back that he's an "a--hole for playing in the front yard" with his grandson. Dave and his wife Denise have been perhaps the loudest voices on the cut-through Sonny Drive in calling for greater traffic-calming measures here in Cumberland Hill. They've created signs asking motor- ists to slow down and telling them that children are playing here. On Monday, the couple stood in their driveway with smiles on their faces as town highway work- ers installed one of the town's two new "traffic cushions," rubberized humps designed to travel over safe- ly at 15 mph. The other hump was installed on Rawson Road. "This is a blessing, really," said Blanchette. "It is going to slow them down." Denise said neighbors up the street, where drivers tend to go even faster, expressed frustration that they didn't also receive the devices. Joanmarie O'Neill says her peace- ful patio was once her happy place, but the sound of birds has long since been replaced with beeping, jackhammering and blasting that shakes her home. "No one should be subjected to that noise at 7 a.m.," said O'Neill, who lives across from the 27-home residential development near Hunters Road. "It's one thing if it's for a month, but three years of this is ridiculous." O'Neill and her neighbors were perplexed when construction began on 27 single-family homes off Cobble Hill Road in early 2016, without the project going before any town boards. The Cobble Hill project had been approved through Rhode Island Superior Court pro- ceedings dating back to 2005. About five years ago, the trees across from O'Neill's house were cleared to make way for construc- tion.
