22 NORTH PROVIDENCE PUBLIC SAFETY COMPLEX SEPTEMBER 11-17, 2019 | NORTH PROVIDENCE EDITION NORTH PROVIDENCE – Fire Chief John Silva III says he and his firefighters are just fine taking a backseat role to the police at the new North Providence Public Safety Complex. "We came from an antique build- ing and now we have lights," he says, laughing. For the fire side of the public safety equation in town, the Police Department's funding of a full safety complex, requested by Mayor Charles Lombardi and approved by the U.S. Department of Justice, couldn't have worked out better, says Silva. He spoke in his office as his latest fish tank, kept here to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility for anyone who comes in, gurgles in the background. "They took care of us, no com- Fire Department happy to be along for the ride By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com BREEZE PHOTO BY ETHAN SHOREY CHIEF JOHN SILVA in front of the new fire bays at the new North Providence Public Safety Complex. plaints," he said. "Everybody's excit- ed to move, happy to be here." Silva's office, like Chief of Police David Tikoian's, is at the front of the building. Though it doesn't quite have the views or space of Tikoian's, it's more than he could have wanted. Lombardi wasn't happy with the dull finish on the floor of the large bays on the fire side of the complex, despite that finish being what was called for in plans, so trucks had to wait a bit longer to be moved from the old safety complex this month as a new finish was to be put down. That delay led to speculation in town that the floor wasn't solid enough to hold the weight of the trucks, a sug- gestion dismissed by officials. See FIRE DEPT., Page 24
