Lombardi bids low, lands rescue vehicle Need for outside help continues decline NORTH PROVIDENCE – The town has secured another frontline rescue vehicle for a fraction of what it would cost new. Mayor Charles Lombardi, the town's public safety director famous for acquiring good vehicles cheap, said the town had only one spare res- cue after it went to a three-rescue system in February, so he was looking to get another rescue truck to bring the Fire Department's total to five, with two spares. "With the third rescue and the num- ber of calls we've been getting, we needed that truck," he said. "This was instead of buying new, the way I do it." He visited the Upperco Volunteer Fire Company, in Upperco, Maryland, after learning that that department was merging with another and looking to offload a truck. "We took advantage of it," he said. The department was asking $30,000 for a 2004 F550 truck, so naturally he came in with an offer of $16,500. The Valley Breeze spoke with insect specialists to find out why there seems to be such an an abundance of gnats in Rhode Island this year. URI entomology research associate Andrew Radin described the abun- dance of gnats this year as a "fluky cyclical thing." "He was so good that his light still shines. There's literally no dim- ming it," said his mother, Heather Callanan, who has channeled her grief into giving back to the com- munity that came together for her late son. Callanan has had great success raising funds for numerous causes in the name of her son, partnering up with others to raise the needed funds. This summer, the 55-mile charity Ride for Ian, held at Ocean State Harley Davidson, raised more than $4,000. The money will be divided between Special Olympics of Rhode Island and a special fund set up in Ian's memory by the Hometown Foundation. The Hometown Foundation had been particularly influential for Novacek, helping to secure a stair- climber for the North Providence resident, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called achon- droplasia and used a wheelchair.
